Citizen Petition

We, the undersigned registered voters of Newton, call on the City Council to urgently adopt measures to allow and encourage increased housing availability, thereby providing opportunities for people of all ages, means, backgrounds and abilities to live in Newton. More diversity in housing options is crucial to fostering a thriving community, a robust economy and a sustainable environment.

Specifically, we call on the City Council to craft and adopt three amendments to the Newton Zoning Ordinances. These amendments would allow by right:

1.         Manufacturing Districts: Multi-family residential and business uses in underutilized manufacturing districts.

2.         Business Districts: Residential buildings up to 5 stories in existing business districts.

3.         Multi-residence Districts: Housing with up to 4 units anywhere that current zoning permits 2 units.
